The COAST Lab

Opened in 2012, the COAST (Coastal, Ocean And Sediment Transport) Laboratory provides physical model testing with combined waves, currents and wind, offered at scales appropriate for device testing, array testing, environmental modelling and coastal engineering.

Over the last 10 years COAST has supported teaching, academic research and commercial development across the coastal and offshore engineering sectors. Housed in the Marine Building, it sits alongside further world-leading facilities including the Marine Navigation Centre, the Cyber-SHIP Lab, and is home to our multidisciplinary Marine Institute and the EPSRC-funded UK-wide consortium on offshore renewable energy, the Supergen ORE Hub.

We would like to invite those with interests in decarbonisation and ORE (from any discipline or sector) to join us for the launch of the new Centre, and users of the COAST Lab (past, present and future) to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the University?s COAST Lab on Thursday 3 November 2022 at the University of Plymouth main campus.

The new Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Decarbonisation and Offshore Renewable Energy

The UK Government?s Net Zero Strategy and Clean Maritime plan identify the need for significant acceleration in offshore renewable energy (ORE) and maritime decarbonisation developments in response to climate change imperatives. The University of Plymouth leads nationally across these areas through our research and teaching, across the many disciplines in the University. The City and region have a significant opportunity to engage with these agendas for the South West, with new developments planned in the Celtic Sea, and real opportunity for economic benefit through jobs and growth in the supply chain.

The Centre for Decarbonisation and Offshore Renewable Energy (CDORE) aims to establish the University of Plymouth as the UK renowned centre for decarbonisation and ORE, with facilities and innovation though our COAST Lab, New Engineering and Design Facility and the Marine Station, and drawing on the wide range of expertise available across the University. Aligned with the UKRI drive to fund interdisciplinary research, the Centre aims to be a beacon for cross-disciplinary research, taking a whole system approach, and leading to acceleration of sustainable developments in energy.
