Plastics and synthetic rubber manufacturer Trinseo has partnered with packaging industry sheet extrusion service provider CEDAP to use recycled polystyrene (PS) in food packaging.

As part of the partnership, Trinseo will provide technical knowledge to CEDAP for the development of a 100% PS yoghurt container.

A new project is currently focusing on the development of a mono-material yoghurt container, including a label, lid and pot.

Citeo consortium that consists of Plastiques Venthenat (PV), Amcor and Triballat is leading the project. CEDAP is also taking part in the project.

Trinseo Polystyrene and Feedstocks Global Business Director Nicolas Joly said: ?This is an exciting collaboration that Trinseo is lending technical, processing and performance expertise on.

?The implementation of a recycled PS in food-grade packaging is coming closer to reality as we work hand-in-hand with the packaging industry. Furthermore, the development of a mono-material yoghurt pot would enable greater ease of recyclability, and in turn, unlock the opportunity for a new life in other applications via chemical or mechanical recycling of PS.?

Recently, Trinseo has announced the construction of a polystyrene chemical recycling facility in Europe.

In addition, the company is planning to provide an average of 30% recycled content to customers for polystyrene packaging in Europe by 2025.

Recently, Americas Styrenics (AmSty), a joint venture of Trinseo?s and Agilyx, formed another joint venture called Regenyx.

AmSty will provide PolyUsable, a PS recycled from post-consumer waste.

In December 2019, Trinseo and European plastic packaging manufacturer Greiner Packaging partnered to increase recycled PS use.
