Trinseo Progressing on Europen Recycled Polystyrene Facility

February 09, 2022

Global materials company and plastics and latex binders manufacturer Trinseo said its plans for a world-class chemical recycling plant in Europe are progressing rapidly. The company's update comes after it contracted with global technology provider Synova and global engineering services company Worley in late 2021, which is working on an engineering package and preparing Trinseo' s Tessenderlo, Belgium site for recycling operations.
Construction on the facility, which will process 15,000 mt/yr of Recycled Polystyrene (rPS) flakes annually, is targeted to start by the end of 2022. Trinseo added that by processing rPS which will be converted into recycled styrene, it will enable further production of PS and/or a styrene derivative including Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Styrene Acrylonitrile (SAN), and will meet increased demand for sustainable options.
The chemical recycling plant is also in line with Trinseo's plastics circularity plans. The company is a founding member of Styrenics Circular Solutions and recently announced an offtake agreement for recycled styrene with recycler Indaver in September 2021, and introduced its bio-attributed PS, ABS and SAN in December 2021. In January 2022, the company also acquired plastic wastes recycler Heathland B.V.
