Designing for the Environment with Composites
We are increasingly discovering the complexity of the impact the human race is having on our environment. Composites have the potential to reduce negative impact, especially where light weight and durable material solutions are needed. However, they can have high embodied energy and be challenging to recycle. As an industry we are committed to developing our understanding of how we impact the environment and designing materials and products which will be more sustainable, protecting our world for future generations. This is an open event of the Composites UK Sustainability Subgroup. It will give an overview of how we are progressing knowledge in different sectors, seeking to give practical advice for designers and manufacturers. It will present some case studies for composite products and showcase tools for analysing the impact at design stage. We will take time to discuss what we need to do to progress in terms of education, training, standards, legislation. The event will be suitable for composite designers, manufacturers, materials suppliers and researchers, as well as OEMs using composites.
